Seixal Beach (Praia do Porto do Seixal)

A small black-sand beach beside the harbour of Seixal, on Madeira's north coast, framed by steep green cliffs; free access, lifeguarded from 1 June to 30 September in 2026.

Seixal Beach (Praia do Porto do Seixal)

Seixal beach — officially Praia do Porto do Seixal — is a short strip of black volcanic sand next to the small harbour of Seixal, in the municipality of Porto Moniz on Madeira's north coast. Steep, green slopes rise straight behind it, which is why it is one of the most photographed beaches on the island. Access is free, and in 2026 it is a lifeguarded bathing beach from 1 June to 30 September.

Why is there black sand here?

Most of Madeira's shoreline is rolled basalt pebbles; the village name itself comes from seixos, pebbles. Visit Madeira and the Câmara Municipal do Porto Moniz both describe the sand beach as a recent natural formation that built up beside the Porto de Abrigo (the breakwater harbour) and the Clube Naval do Seixal. The sand is volcanic and dark, so it heats up quickly in direct sun.

What facilities are there?

According to the municipality and Visit Madeira:

  • showers and a beach bar
  • kayak rental, linked to the Clube Naval
  • free access, with the harbour road running right behind the beach

The beach is popular all year with bodyboarders, kayakers and stand-up paddlers.

When is it lifeguarded?

Under the regional government's Portaria n.º 206/2026, Porto do Seixal is a lifeguarded bathing beach (praia de banhos) with a 2026 bathing season from 1 June to 30 September. Two neighbouring bathing waters, Laje and Clube Naval do Seixal, are officially identified for the same period but are not listed as lifeguarded. Outside the season, nobody is on duty.

Is it safe to swim?

This is the north coast: the beach faces the open Atlantic and the swell can build quickly, especially from autumn to spring. The breakwater gives some shelter, but waves still break on the sand. Practical rules:

  • check IPMA and Capitania do Porto do Funchal sea warnings before going
  • respect the flag and the lifeguards' instructions in season
  • do not swim off the breakwater or the rocks

The municipality specifically warns that at the nearby Poças das Lesmas rock pools, by Laje, the sea can surprise bathers even when the swell looks harmless.

Best time to visit

For swimming, calm summer days within the lifeguard season are the obvious choice. The view down onto the beach and harbour from the road above Seixal is worth a stop on the way in.

What else is nearby?

  • The municipality notes the beach is about 5 minutes from the laurel forest at Chão da Ribeira, inland from Seixal.
  • Continue west to the lava pools of Porto Moniz, or east towards the Véu da Noiva viewpoint.
  • On a clear day, combine it with the misty laurel trees of Fanal.
  • More on the north coast.
