The Madeira Botanical Garden — officially Jardim Botânico da Madeira Eng.º Rui Vieira — is the regional government's botanical garden, run by the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN). It covers about 8 hectares, roughly 5 of them landscaped, on a slope between 150 m and 300 m above sea level, about 3 km from central Funchal. It is the best single place on the island to see Madeira's native and endemic plants labelled side by side.
What is in the garden?
The garden is organised into themed sections: Madeiran indigenous and endemic species, an arboretum, succulents, agro-industrial plants, medicinal and aromatic plants, and palms and cycads. The Funchal municipality's visitor site counts more than 2,500 plants, including about 200 characteristic of the region. Its terraces look out over Funchal and the harbour.
Also within the grounds:
- A Natural History Museum with three rooms.
- A bird park (Louro Parque) with parrots, macaws and cockatoos.
- A herbarium and a seed bank, used for research and conservation of Macaronesian flora.
What is its history?
Proposals for a botanical garden on Madeira date back to at least 1798. The site was the Quinta do Bom Sucesso, an estate once owned by the family of William Reid, founder of Reid's Hotel, who used it as a private park. In the 1950s the regional Junta Geral acquired the estate to house the garden, which opened to the public on 30 April 1960. Its founder and first director was the engineer Rui Vieira, and in 2009 the regional government added his name to the garden's title.

What to combine it with
Take the cable car up to Monte for the Monte Palace Tropical Garden and the Monte toboggan, then return to the centre on the Funchal cable car and finish at the Mercado dos Lavradores. More in the Funchal region guide.
