Doca do Cavacas — also known locally as Poças do Gomes — is a small bathing complex built around natural pools of volcanic rock on Funchal's seafront promenade, between the Lido and Praia Formosa. Run by the municipal company Frente MarFunchal, it has lifeguards, showers, changing rooms and a snack bar, direct access to the sea, and a view west to the sea cliff of Cabo Girão. Entry costs €6 for adults in 2026.
What is Doca do Cavacas?
Visit Madeira describes it as a small bathing complex with a natural pool of volcanic origin and direct sea access, at Rua da Ponta da Cruz 66, on the Passeio Público Marítimo. Frente MarFunchal lists these facilities as available all year:
- lifeguard cover ("praia vigiada") and first aid
- showers, toilets and changing rooms
- sunbed and parasol hire
- sea access and natural pools
- snack bar and Wi-Fi

When are lifeguards on duty?
The regional government's Portaria n.º 206/2026 lists Poças do Gomes – Doca do Cavacas as a lifeguarded bathing beach with a 2026 bathing season from 1 June to 15 September.
What about water quality?
This is the most important thing to check before swimming here. A fact-check by DNOTICIAS.PT (October 2024) documented repeated bathing bans: in August 2021, four times in summer 2022, and from 22 to 27 July 2024, after samples showed levels of E. coli and intestinal enterococci above the limits. The Portuguese Environment Agency classified the water as "poor" in several years, including the 2024 assessment, while still treating the site as a bathing water. The cause has not been officially confirmed; land-based run-off and discharges have been suggested.
In practice: look at the flag and notices at the entrance, check the APA bathing-water information, and avoid swimming after heavy rain.
Safety in rough seas
The pools are open to the Atlantic. In winter storms waves wash right over them — Commons photographers have documented the pools swamped by stormy seas — and in February 2026 Frente MarFunchal closed all sea access at its complexes during heavy swell. Follow closures and the lifeguards' instructions.
How to get there and what to combine
The complex sits on the coastal promenade, so you can walk west from the Lido area or east from Praia Formosa, which is the free alternative next door. From the western side, Visit Madeira notes views of Cabo Girão. See more of Funchal, or how to get around without a car.
