Porto Santo beach is a single stretch of golden sand about 9 km long on the south coast of Porto Santo, the smaller inhabited island of the Madeira archipelago, running past the town of Vila Baleira. It is the reason most visitors cross from Madeira: a long natural sand beach is something Madeira itself does not have. In 2026 three sections have lifeguards, with seasons stretching from May to October.
How long is the beach and where exactly is it?
Visit Madeira describes a golden-sand beach of about 9 km; Wikipedia gives 9,200 m. It runs along the island's south coast, and for management it is divided into sections — Wikipedia lists Calheta, Cabeço da Ponta, Ribeiro Cochino, Ribeiro Salgado, Fontinha and Penedo. Fontinha is the central section near Vila Baleira and the old pier (Cais Velho); Calheta is the far south-western end.
Which parts are lifeguarded in 2026?
The regional government's Portaria n.º 206/2026 sets the bathing seasons and the lifeguarded beaches for 2026:
| Section | 2026 bathing season | Lifeguards |
|---|---|---|
| Ribeiro Salgado | 1 May – 31 October | yes |
| Fontinha | 15 May – 31 October | yes |
| Cabeço da Ponta | 15 May – 31 October | yes |
| Calheta, Lagoa, Pedras Pretas, Penedo, Porto das Salemas, Ribeiro Cochino | 1 June – 30 September | no |
Calheta is also listed as a praia de uso limitado (limited-use beach). If you want lifeguard cover, base yourself at one of the three supervised sections. Visit Madeira lists Blue Flag awards for Fontinha and Ribeiro Salgado; flags are renewed annually, so check on site.
Is the sand really therapeutic?
Visit Madeira promotes the sand and water as having therapeutic properties, and Portuguese Wikipedia mentions use for rheumatic and orthopaedic complaints. Treat this as local tradition and promotion rather than medical advice. What is certain is that the sand is fine and golden, and Visit Madeira describes the water as calm and clear.
Recognition
- In 2012 the beach was named one of the 7 Maravilhas de Portugal in the dune-beach category (Wikipedia, citing Público).
- In 2022 European Best Destinations voted it the best beach in Europe (Visit Madeira).
How do I get to Porto Santo?
- By ferry: the Lobo Marinho, run by Porto Santo Line, sails between Funchal and Porto Santo; the operator puts the island about 71 km from Madeira. Timetables change by season and extra sailings are added, so check the operator's site.
- By plane: Porto Santo Airport has flights to Madeira Airport of about 15 minutes (Wikipedia).
Things to keep in mind
- The island is small (about 42 km²), so you can reach any part of the beach quickly by car, bike or taxi.
- Even on a calm-looking day, check IPMA sea warnings and swim near lifeguards outside peak summer.
