Prainha do Caniçal

A small beach of natural, copper-coloured volcanic sand near Caniçal, on the road to Ponta de São Lourenço in Madeira's dry east; lifeguarded from 30 June to 27 September in 2026.

Prainha do Caniçal

Prainha do Caniçal is a small beach of natural volcanic sand near the village of Caniçal, in the municipality of Machico, on the road out to the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula at Madeira's eastern tip. Its copper-brown sand is unusual on an island where most beaches are rolled pebbles or imported sand. In 2026 it is a lifeguarded bathing beach from 30 June to 27 September.

What makes Prainha different?

Visit Madeira highlights two things. First, the sand: natural, of volcanic origin and copper-coloured, whereas most of Madeira's beaches are made of rolled pebbles (the sandy beaches at Machico and Calheta use imported sand). Second, the setting: the east end of the island is arid, with yellow and brown slopes rather than the green of the north coast. Close by are the Dunas da Piedade, calcareous fossil dunes that Visit Madeira describes as being of geomorphological interest.

What facilities are there?

According to Visit Madeira:

  • food and drink service
  • changing rooms and toilets
  • parasols and sunloungers
  • a car park

When is it lifeguarded?

The regional government's Portaria n.º 206/2026 lists Prainha as a lifeguarded bathing beach (praia de banhos) with a 2026 bathing season from 30 June to 27 September — a later start than most Funchal beaches, which open on 1 June. The same Portaria also classifies Prainha as a praia de uso limitado (limited-use beach), so follow any signs on site about where bathing and access are allowed. Outside the season there are no lifeguards.

Safety notes

  • The beach is tucked below a steep rocky slope; stay off the cliff base, where loose stones can fall.
  • Rocks rise out of the water at the sides of the bay; swim in the open sandy area, inside any marked bathing zone.
  • The east of Madeira can be windy. Check IPMA wind and sea warnings before going, and follow the flag and the lifeguards in season.

How to combine it

Prainha sits on the way to the start of the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço (PR 8). The peninsula is a Partial Natural Reserve about 9 km long, according to Visit Madeira. One option is to walk in the cooler morning hours and come down to Prainha afterwards to swim.

Best time to visit

Within the lifeguard season, mornings tend to be the most comfortable time on this sun-exposed coast. The beach is small, so on hot summer weekends space on the sand fills quickly.
