Madeira works well for families if you plan around a few official rules: children aged 12 or under walk the classified trails free but still need a booking, the Funchal cable car is free up to age 6, and most supervised seawater pools only have lifeguards in summer. This guide collects the child prices, age limits and safety rules published by the operators and the regional and national authorities, with the short walks and Funchal attractions that suit younger children.
Key facts for families (2026)
- Classified trails: children aged 12 or under are exempt from the fee, but must still be registered and booked on SIMplifica (IFCN).
- Funchal cable car: free for ages 0–6, half price for 7–14.
- Monte Palace Tropical Garden: free for children up to 14 with an adult.
- Madeira Botanical Garden: free under 6, €3 for 6–12.
- Porto Moniz natural pools: free for children 3 and under; lifeguarded season 15 April–15 October 2026.
- Car seats: compulsory for children under 12 and under 135 cm (Código da Estrada, article 55).
- Sun: the Direção-Geral da Saúde advises no sun exposure for babies under 6 months and avoiding the sun from 11:00 to 17:00.
Do children pay to walk Madeira's official trails?
Since 1 January 2026, walking an IFCN classified trail (the "PR" routes) requires a time-slot booking on the regional government's SIMplifica portal. According to IFCN's FAQ, minors aged 12 or under, resident or not, are exempt from the fee, but registration and booking are still mandatory for everyone, including exempt walkers. People with a disability of 60% or more, and one accompanying guardian, are also exempt with proof. See trail booking and fees for how the portal works.
The practical consequence: book a slot for every child, even if the price shows €0, and keep the confirmation offline. Slots have limited capacity, so in busy periods book the whole family together.
Which easy trails suit children?
Two short classified trails are rated easy and are walked out and back on the same path:
| Trail | Official distance | Official time | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| PR 11 Vereda dos Balcões | 1.5 km each way (3 km total) | 1 h 30 min | Starts at Ribeiro Frio on the ER 103; IFCN lists 880 m and 870 m as the highest and lowest points |
| PR 6.1 Levada do Risco | 3 km each way (6 km total) | 2 h | Starts from the ER 105 at Rabaçal; IFCN lists 1,288 m and 1,000 m as the highest and lowest points |
Vereda dos Balcões is the gentlest: with only 10 m between its highest and lowest points it is almost flat, and it ends at a viewpoint over the laurel forest valley of the Ribeira da Metade. It is the obvious first walk for small children.
Levada do Risco is longer and the numbers matter: a difference of about 290 m between the highest and lowest points means that part of the return is uphill, which is where tired children slow down. Visit Madeira quotes 1.5 km each way, while IFCN, the managing body, gives 3 km each way from the road; plan on the official figure. Like every levada, its edges can drop away steeply, so keep small children on the inner side and hold hands where the path narrows.
Both trails are at altitude, where weather can differ completely from Funchal's. Bring a warm layer and rain jacket even on a sunny coastal day.
How much does the Funchal cable car cost for children?
The Funchal cable car links the lower station on Rua Dom Carlos I, next to the old town, with Largo das Babosas in Monte. Its official site lists (2026):
- Return: €22; one way: €16 (adult prices).
- Children 0–6: free. Children 7–14: 50% off.
- Hours: 08:45–17:45, every day except Christmas Day.
A common family plan is to ride up, visit a garden in Monte and come down by cable car, taxi or bus.
What can families do in Monte?
Monte Palace Tropical Garden has its entrance next to the cable car's upper station. Adults pay €18 and children up to 14 enter free with an adult. The garden is open daily except 25 December, 09:00–19:00 from April to September and 09:00–18:00 from October to March. The garden itself warns that, as a historic site on steep terrain, it has limited accessibility for people with reduced mobility — which also applies to buggies.
The Monte toboggan (carros de cesto) is a roughly 2 km descent in a wicker sledge steered by two drivers, from below the steps of Monte Church to Livramento, at up to 38 km/h according to the Carreiros do Monte association. Its 2026 prices are per sledge: €30 for one person, €40 for two and €60 for three. Rides run Monday to Saturday from 09:00 (last departures at 17:45), tickets are sold on site for the same day only, there are no online bookings, and three-person rides are not offered in rain or on wet ground. It is closed on 14–15 August, 25 December, 1 January, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The association does not publish an age rule, so ask at the ticket desk before queuing with very young children.
Is the Botanical Garden a good option with children?
The Jardim Botânico da Madeira Eng.º Rui Vieira, run by IFCN, is open every day except Christmas Day, 09:00–18:00 (tickets until 17:30). From 1 January 2026 tickets cost €10 over 12, €3 for ages 6–12, and are free under 6. Its rules state that children must always be accompanied by adults, and ball games and bicycles are not allowed. It can be reached by Horários do Funchal buses 29, 30, 31 and 31A, or by a separate cable car from Largo das Babosas in Monte — useful for linking it with the Monte visit.
Where can children swim with lifeguards?
Madeira has few sandy beaches, so many families swim in seawater pools. The key detail is that lifeguard cover follows an official bathing season set each year by Portaria. For 2026 (Portaria n.º 206/2026):
| Bathing area | Lifeguarded season 2026 |
|---|---|
| Porto Moniz | 15 April – 15 October |
| Funchal: Lido, Praia Formosa, Poças do Gomes – Doca do Cavacas | 1 June – 15 September |
| Prainha (Machico) | 30 June – 27 September |
| Porto Santo: Fontinha, Cabeço da Ponta | 15 May – 31 October |
The Porto Moniz natural pools are the most family-oriented: the municipality lists a playground, first-aid post, changing rooms, a snack bar and lifeguards, and the complex is open all year (09:00–17:00 in winter, 09:00–19:00 in summer). Entry is €3 for anyone over 3 and free for children aged 3 or under.
Outside these dates, assume no lifeguard is on duty and choose sheltered pools on calm days only.
What is the car-seat law in Portugal?
If you rent a car, Portuguese rules apply. Under article 55 of the Código da Estrada, as summarised by Madeira's regional transport directorate (DRET):
- Children under 12 years and under 135 cm must use an approved child restraint suited to their size and weight.
- They must travel in the rear seats, unless they are 12 or older, taller than 135 cm, or the car has no rear seat or rear seat belts (from age 3).
- A child under 3 may travel in the front only in a rear-facing seat with the passenger airbag switched off.
- Children under 12 and under 135 cm but over 36 kg use the seat belt with a booster cushion.
- Only seats approved under UN regulations R44 or R129 meet the requirements.
- The fine is €120 to €600 per child carried incorrectly.
Ask your rental company for the right seat type when you book, and check it is installed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
How should you protect children from the sun?
Madeira's mild temperatures can hide strong sun, especially at the pools and on the high trails. The Direção-Geral da Saúde (DGS) advises:
- Babies under 6 months should not be exposed to the sun; direct exposure should be avoided under 3 years.
- Avoid the sun between 11:00 and 17:00.
- Use sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, reapplied every 2 hours and after swimming or heavy sweating.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat and drink more water.
In an emergency, the European number 112 works throughout Portugal, including Madeira and Porto Santo.
