Hotel Quinta da Serra is a 52-room hotel on a 19th-century estate in Jardim da Serra, the upland parish of Câmara de Lobos, at about 820 m above sea level. It is registered as a hotel (RNET 4751) and listed by Visit Madeira as a five-star hotel with certified organic farming. As a base it sits 2.9 km by road below the Boca da Corrida viewpoint and 14.9 km from central Funchal, with the cooler air of the hills rather than a sea view.
What kind of property is it?
According to the Turismo de Portugal registry, the hotel opened in 2003 and has 46 rooms and 6 suites for up to 104 guests, one unit adapted for reduced mobility, an indoor pool, a gym, a tennis court and a meeting room for 60 people. Visit Madeira describes a 14.5-hectare estate with certified organic agriculture whose produce is used in the restaurant, and says the hotel has been carbon neutral since 2021. Booking.com lists a hot tub and spa next to the indoor pool, two bars, and rooms in the old farmhouse as well as in the modern wing.
What is the history of the estate?
Visit Madeira's page on the Quinta do Jardim da Serra says the estate was built in the 19th century by the English consul Henry Veitch, and that some authors trace the parish name to it. The gardens keep native Madeiran trees alongside species from around the world, and a eucalyptus at the entrance is about 200 years old and 64 m tall.
