The wreck of the NRP Afonso Cerqueira (F488) is an 85-metre Portuguese Navy corvette that was deliberately sunk on 4 September 2018 south of Cabo Girão, off Madeira's south coast, to create an artificial reef. It lies inside the Cabo Girão Marine Natural Park at 12 to 30 metres, and the regional sea portal rates it a medium-difficulty dive reached by boat. Note that it is off Madeira island, not Porto Santo.
What is the Afonso Cerqueira and where does it lie?
The Afonso Cerqueira belonged to the Baptista de Andrade class of corvettes. It was built at the Cartagena naval yards in Spain, launched on 16 March 1973 and commissioned on 28 June 1975. According to the regional government's sea portal (Mar Madeira), it served mainly on surveillance and rescue missions in the Azores and Madeira until it ended operations on 11 March 2015. In 2018 it was sunk south of Cabo Girão, within the marine park created by Regional Legislative Decree 4/2017/M.

Is the wreck off Porto Santo?
No. Some guides place it near Porto Santo, but the official Mar Madeira sheet and the sinking reports put it off Madeira island, below the Cabo Girão cliffs. Porto Santo has its own artificial-reef wrecks; if you are staying on Porto Santo, this site means a ferry crossing first.
What is the dive like?
With the shallowest parts at about 12 m and the seabed at about 30 m, the corvette suits divers who are comfortable at depth. Mar Madeira classes it as medium difficulty. Underwater photographs show the hull, bridge and deck fittings still easy to recognise, with marine growth spreading over the structure since 2018. Because the deepest point is beyond the usual open-water limit, many centres ask for an advanced certification or equivalent experience; check with the operator before booking. Penetrating the interior of any wreck needs specific wreck training.
How do you get there?
The site can only be reached by boat. Dive centres in Funchal and Câmara de Lobos run trips when sea conditions allow; the journey along the south coast is short. We have not been able to verify official coordinates for the wreck, so none are published here — your operator will position the boat on the site.
What should you know before going?
- Weather: the south coast is sheltered from the north-east trade winds, but southerly swell can cancel boat dives. Keep a spare day in your plans.
- Protected area: the wreck lies in a classified marine park; take nothing and do not disturb the reef life that has colonised it.
- After the dive: wait before flying or driving up to high places such as Pico do Arieiro.
- Warm-up dive: the shallower Garajau Marine Reserve, east of Funchal, is a good place to check your buoyancy and kit in Atlantic conditions first.
Nearby on land
After diving, the Cabo Girão skywalk overlooks the same stretch of sea from the cliff top, and the fishing town of Câmara de Lobos is minutes away by car. Funchal's waterfront and the Mercado dos Lavradores are a short drive east.
