Quinta do Furão is a 65-unit rural hotel on a clifftop just outside the town of Santana, on Madeira's north-east coast. It is registered as a hotel rural (RNET 7238) and listed by Visit Madeira as a four-star hotel. As a base it puts you 6.6 km by road from the Queimadas start of PR 9 and 13 km from Achada do Teixeira, the trailhead for PR 1.2 to Pico Ruivo.
What kind of property is it?
According to the Turismo de Portugal registry, the hotel opened in 1997 and has 61 rooms, 2 suites and 2 apartments, for a capacity of 134 guests; one unit is adapted for guests with reduced mobility. Visit Madeira describes 65 rooms in seven types, a full renovation in 2020 and a restaurant that has been running since 1993, with a wood-ceilinged dining room, two fireplaces and a covered outdoor balcony. The registry lists indoor and outdoor pools, a gym, a small spa and a meeting room for 80 people. Visit Madeira describes the clifftop estate as strongly inspired by vineyards, and the operating company is registered as an agricultural as well as a tourism business.
Where exactly is it?
The address is Estrada da Quinta do Furão, 6, 9230-082 Santana. By road (OSRM routing on OpenStreetMap data) it is:
- 2.9 km to the Santana thatched houses in the town centre;
- 6.6 km to Queimadas, start of PR 9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde;
- 13 km to Achada do Teixeira, start of PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo;
- 18.7 km to Ribeiro Frio, start of PR 11 Vereda dos Balcões;
- 22.8 km to Madeira Airport and 39.6 km to central Funchal.
Why is it a practical base for the high peaks?
PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro is one-way beyond Pedra Rija, so walkers coming from Pico do Areeiro finish at Pico Ruivo and descend by PR 1.2 to Achada do Teixeira, on the Santana side. Staying here keeps the end of that walk close, while the Pico do Areeiro start is 29.6 km away by road. All four trails need a booking and fee; see trail booking and fees.
How do you get there without a car?
The SIGA network lists a route called "Santana" (56). We could not confirm a stop at the hotel, and the walk from the town centre is about 2 km in a straight line, so a car or taxi is the realistic option; see getting around Madeira without a car.
Practical notes
The Booking.com listing gives check-in from 14:00 and check-out until 12:00, free private parking, a sauna, a fitness room and a massage room. The north coast is wetter and often cloudier than Funchal, which is worth remembering when planning pool time or early starts. More on the area on our north coast page.
