Baía Madeira Hotel, formerly Dom Pedro Madeira, is a four-star hotel on Estrada de São Roque in Machico, on the bay where the town's beach is, registered as RNET 1188. The hotel says the beach is 150 m away and the airport about 4 km. It suits travellers who want an east-coast base for the Ponta de São Lourenço trail, short airport transfers and direct buses to Funchal.
Where exactly is it?
The hotel is on the western side of Machico Bay. In a straight line it is about 200 m from Praia de Machico, about 300 m from the Forte de Nossa Senhora do Amparo, about 6.8 km from the start of the Ponta de São Lourenço trail (PR 8) at Baía d'Abra and about 5.6 km from Prainha do Caniçal. How do you get there and around without a car?
Machico is on the Companhia de Autocarros da Madeira (CAM) network. Under the SIGA numbering in force since 9 March 2026, line 701 runs Funchal / Machico and line 702 Funchal / Caniçal – Baía d'Abra, which ends at the PR 8 trailhead. From Machico, the trailhead can therefore be reached by bus without changing. Check the SIGA timetable for current departures and the stop nearest the hotel. What is the property like?
The hotel lists Classic, Bay View, Superior, Triple, Junior Suite and Single rooms, with views over the sea, the bay, the garden or the mountains. There is a heated saltwater outdoor pool with sea views, a restaurant, bars, a sun terrace and subtropical gardens. Buffet breakfast is included in all rates, Wi-Fi is free throughout and the hotel is smoke-free. What is nearby for walkers?
Besides PR 8, the Levada do Caldeirão Verde (PR 9) and Vereda dos Balcões (PR 11) are in the island's interior to the north-west; see each trail page for access options. Before any walk, check the trail status on the IFCN website, as trails can close after storms.
