Christmas in Funchal 2026/27: Lights, Market and Madeiran Traditions

Funchal's Christmas season starts on 1 December 2026, when the lights over the city's amphitheatre are switched on, and runs until 10 January 2027 according to the official Visit Madeira calendar. Around the lights there is a Christmas market on Avenida Arriaga, an ethnographic village with nativity scenes at Largo da Restauração, and, in the second half of December, two traditions that are worth planning around: the early-morning Missas do Parto (from 15 December) and the Night of the Farmers' Market (23 December). The dates below come from the official Visit Madeira calendar and the Events Madeira platform, and are listed as upcoming; the calendar is subject to change.

When do the Christmas lights go on in Funchal?

The official 2026 calendar lists the "General Illumination of Funchal Amphitheatre" from 1 December 2026 to 10 January 2027. Visit Madeira says the lights come on at nightfall on 1 December and light up the main avenues, public buildings, churches, squares and monuments. Its blog adds that the view of the lit city from the bay is especially striking. Madeirans call the season "A Festa".

The lights are the official start of the Christmas and New Year programme, which also covers Porto Moniz and Santana in Events Madeira's listing. The New Year's Eve fireworks on 31 December are part of the same programme; see our New Year's Eve fireworks guide.

What is in the Christmas market and the ethnographic village?

Events Madeira lists three linked attractions in the centre of Funchal, all starting on 1 December 2026:

Event Where Dates (2026/27)
Christmas Market Central square, Avenida Arriaga 1 December – 10 January, from 10:00
Ethnographic Village Largo da Restauração 1 December – 10 January, 09:00–23:00
Christmas Workshops Next to the stage, Avenida Arriaga 2 December – 8 January
Christmas Village (for children) Praça do Município 4 December – 6 January, from 10:00

The Christmas Market has decorated stalls selling regional products, handicrafts and seasonal food, including plants, fruit and sugar-cane honey and its by-products. Events Madeira specifies that food and drink are for take-away only. Visit Madeira's blog mentions bolo do caco, vinha d'alhos sandwiches, poncha and seasonal liqueurs, with music several times a day.

The Ethnographic Village presents traditional crafts, food and folklore and two kinds of nativity scene: the Madeiran one set outdoors, showing terraces, valleys, ravines, little houses and haystacks, and the tiered one with the Child Jesus, fruit, grain and bread. You can order wheat soup and bolo do caco, for take-away.

The Christmas Workshops let you take part, free of charge on specific dates and times, in preparing traditional products. The Christmas Village is a municipal square dedicated to children and families, with tales, crafts, traditional games, magic shows and performances. What are the Missas do Parto?

The Missas do Parto ("childbirth masses") are a series of dawn masses honouring Our Lady. Events Madeira lists them from 15 to 23 December 2026, starting at 06:00 (Visit Madeira's blog says they begin as early as 5 a.m.) in Funchal and in Câmara de Lobos, Machico, Ribeira Brava, Santana and São Vicente. Each parish holds nine masses, one for each month of Mary's pregnancy.

After mass, people stay in the churchyard: sandwiches of carne de vinha d'alhos (pork marinated in wine and garlic), homemade liqueurs and carols, until sunrise according to Visit Madeira. The Funchal listing gives the Sé Cathedral as the address. Visit Madeira calls it one of the best ways to see Madeirans' Christmas spirit. It is a religious service, so keep a low profile and ask before photographing people.

What is the Night of the Farmers' Market?

The most famous evening is on 23 December, at the Mercado dos Lavradores in Funchal. Events Madeira describes shoppers coming from all over the island for Christmas produce: fruit, vegetables, wheat pots, holly and more. The streets around the market are closed to traffic, and as night falls the celebration peaks in the fish-market square, where carols are sung; Visit Madeira says the singing has gone on for more than 40 years and lasts over an hour inside the market. The festivities continue until dawn, with homemade liqueurs and vinha d'alhos sandwiches.

More broadly, "Christmas Market Nights" take place on different dates between 9 and 23 December 2026, from 20:00, in Calheta, Câmara de Lobos, Funchal, Ribeira Brava, Santa Cruz, Santana and São Vicente. If the 23rd does not suit you, another municipality's night may.

What happens after Christmas?

  • 31 December: the New Year's Eve fireworks, about eight minutes from 58 launch stations.
  • 5 January 2027, 19:00: "Chants of Epiphany" at Praça do Povo, a concert that revives the tradition of singing on the eve of Three Kings' Day. Visit Madeira describes neighbours and family visiting each other's homes with regional instruments, with liqueurs and slices of bolo-rei offered, and a giant bolo-rei shared in central Funchal.
  • 6 January: the Christmas Village ends; the market, the ethnographic village and the lights run to 10 January.

What is the weather like in Funchal in December?

Funchal's IPMA 1991–2020 normal for December gives an average daily maximum of 21.0 °C and a minimum of 15.5 °C, with 94.8 mm of rain on average and 8.6 days with at least 1 mm. That is the wettest of the three months around the turn of the year, so plan for showers: the market stalls are open-air. Our guide to Madeira in November shows the October to December figures side by side.

How can you plan a Christmas visit?

  • Spend the evening walking. The lights are best seen at night. The market, the ethnographic village and the Christmas Village are within the town centre, a short walk from the old town.
  • Pick your tradition. Missas do Parto are early morning; the Night of the Farmers' Market is late evening. Do not plan a long hike on the day after either.
  • Eat what the stalls list. For dishes beyond the market, see what to eat in Madeira.
  • Check the schedule. The official calendar is subject to change, and individual times (such as the lights switch-on time, shown as a placeholder on Events Madeira) should be checked closer to the date.
