Pico do Arieiro (officially Pico do Areeiro) is the third-highest peak on Madeira at 1,818 m, and it is the island's best-known sunrise viewpoint because a road leads almost to the top. Visit Madeira says the sunrise show is available "if the weather allows", so the view is never guaranteed. This guide pulls together calculated sunrise times by month, what the climate record says about cold and cloud, parking, and how the PR 1 trail fits in.
What time is sunrise at Pico do Arieiro?
Sunrise ranges from about 06:59 in mid-June to about 08:11 in mid-October (clock time). The table gives first light (civil twilight begins) and sunrise for the 15th of each month, calculated for the summit coordinates with the sunrise-sunset.org API and converted to Madeira time: UTC+00:00 in winter and UTC+01:00 from the last Sunday of March to the last Sunday of October.
| Month (15th) | First light | Sunrise |
|---|---|---|
| January | 07:43 | 08:09 |
| February | 07:25 | 07:50 |
| March | 06:53 | 07:17 |
| April | 07:12 | 07:37 |
| May | 06:41 | 07:08 |
| June | 06:30 | 06:59 |
| July | 06:42 | 07:10 |
| August | 07:05 | 07:31 |
| September | 07:26 | 07:51 |
| October | 07:47 | 08:11 |
| November | 07:11 | 07:37 |
| December | 07:35 | 08:02 |
These are astronomical times at the coordinates, not adjusted for the terrain; ridges to the east can make the sun appear a few minutes later. Aim to be at the viewpoint before first light, since the sky colours start building then.

Will there be a sea of clouds?
Only sometimes. A "sea of clouds" is, by the meteorological definition, an overcast layer of stratocumulus seen from above with a fairly uniform top. At 1,818 m, the summit can sit above such a layer, but it can equally sit inside the cloud. Wikipedia describes the area's climate as unusually wet for a Mediterranean one, with much of the precipitation falling as drizzle and fog. We found no verified statistic for how often a clear sunrise or a cloud sea occurs, so none is given here.
In practice: check the forecast and a live webcam the evening before and again before you leave Funchal. If the summit is in cloud, a sunrise there will be grey and wet, and the better plan may be the coast.
How cold does it get before dawn?
A weather station at 1,610 m recorded (1961–1990) mean daily minimums of 2.9 °C in January, 2.8 °C in February, 3.5 °C in December and about 10.8 °C in August. Record lows were −3.0 °C in January, −4.3 °C in February and March, and −6.0 °C in April. The summit is about 200 m higher than the station, and the figures date from before 1990, so treat them as a guide to how much colder it is than the coast, not as a forecast.
Rainfall matters as well: Wikipedia's table for the same station lists 437 mm in January and 13.2 mm in July. Winter mornings are therefore both the coldest and the wettest. Wear a warm layer, a windproof and waterproof jacket, gloves and a hat; bring a torch for the walk from the car park in the dark. We have no verified wind figures for the summit, so check the day's forecast.

How do you get there and where do you park?
By car, the road runs from Funchal directly to the summit car park (see driving in Madeira for mountain-road and fog advice). Visit Madeira lists parking at €4.00 per hour. Wikipedia notes a large car park, a restaurant and a souvenir shop, and a Portuguese Air Force radar station built there in 2011. Wikipedia adds that up to 1,000 people a day can pass through at peak times, so expect company at a popular sunrise.
For travel without a car, Visit Madeira lists Horários do Funchal, the bus operator, as the transport contact (+351 291 705 555). We could not verify any service that arrives before sunrise, so confirm that directly; the car-free guide covers other options.

Can you combine sunrise with the PR 1 trail?
Possibly, but plan it carefully. The PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro starts at the same viewpoint. Visit Madeira describes two options: out and back to the Pedra Rija viewpoint (1.2 km each way), or the full 6.1 km one-way route to Pico Ruivo (1,862 m), about 3 hours, of moderate difficulty. Visit Madeira listed the trail as open when we checked on 1 November 2026.
- Fees (2026): €4.50 to Pedra Rija and back; €10.50 for the full route (visitors over 12; children aged 12 or under are exempt but still register).
- Booking: exclusively on the SIMplifica portal, in entry time slots, with a tolerance of about 15 minutes. Same-day booking is possible subject to availability, and a slot closes when it is full. See trail booking and fees.
- Darkness: we could not verify whether any slot opens before sunrise. Check the available times on SIMplifica before you plan on walking the ridge in the dark.
- Return: the full route is one-way from Pedra Rija, so you need onward transport; see PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo.

What do people commonly misjudge?
- The clock. The sun rises at 08:11 in mid-October but 06:59 in mid-June; the best months for an early start differ from the best months for weather. See best time to visit Madeira.
- The cold. The summit minimums in winter are close to freezing, not coastal temperatures.
- The guarantee. Cloud can cover the summit, so keep an alternative plan.
- The trail. The viewpoint listing mentions only parking as an access condition; the trail fee and slot apply to PR 1 itself.
