Porto Santo is the smaller inhabited island of the Madeira archipelago, about 43 km north-east of Madeira, with an area of 42.59 km² and a single town, Vila Baleira. Its draw is a sand beach of about 9 km along the south coast, something Madeira itself does not have, plus low volcanic peaks with two open waymarked trails. You get there on the Lobo Marinho ferry from Funchal, a crossing of about 2 h 15 min, or on the short inter-island flight.
Key facts at a glance
- Ferry: Porto Santo Line's Lobo Marinho from Funchal; about 2 h 15 min each way. On most days in November and December 2026 it leaves Funchal at 08:00 and returns from Porto Santo at 18:00, with no sailing on some weekdays.
- Flights: Binter has operated the Funchal–Porto Santo public-service route since 2018.
- Beach: about 9 km of sand; three sections had lifeguards in 2026, with seasons ending on 31 October.
- Casa Colombo museum: in Vila Baleira; open Monday to Friday 10:00–12:30 and 14:00–17:30, Saturday 10:00–13:00, closed on Sundays and public holidays; adult ticket €6.

How do I get to Porto Santo?
By ferry. The Lobo Marinho, run by Porto Santo Line, sails from Funchal's harbour. The operator gives the crossing time as about 2 h 15 min and the distance as 71 km. Foot passengers must be at the terminal at least 30 minutes before departure and show an identity document; cars must be at the car deck one hour before. Children up to 4 travel free but still need a ticket.
The timetable changes month by month. In November 2026, for example, the usual pattern is 08:00 from Funchal and 18:00 back from Porto Santo, with extra afternoon sailings on some weekends and no sailings on 10 and 17 November. December 2026 follows the same 08:00/18:00 pattern on most days, with no sailings on 2, 9 and 15 December. Always check the monthly table on the operator's site before planning a day trip. Changing a passenger ticket less than 24 hours before departure costs €5 per segment.
By plane. Porto Santo has its own airport. The scheduled Funchal–Porto Santo flights are a public-service route run by Binter, which has operated it since 2018. Visit Madeira also notes that Porto Santo is about an hour and a half's flight from Lisbon.
What is the beach like?
The beach runs for about 9 km along the south coast, from near Vila Baleira to Ponta da Calheta at the south-western tip. It is divided into named sections, and under the regional Portaria n.º 206/2026 three of them had lifeguards in 2026: Ribeiro Salgado (1 May–31 October), Fontinha and Cabeço da Ponta (both 15 May–31 October). Other sections, such as Calheta, Penedo and Ribeiro Cochino, are bathing waters without lifeguards, and Calheta is listed as a limited-use beach.
These are the latest-ending bathing seasons in the whole archipelago: on Madeira itself, every lifeguard season in 2026 ended by 15 October. For more detail on sections and facilities, see our page on Porto Santo beach.
What is there to see in Vila Baleira?
Vila Baleira is the island's only town and seat of the municipality, raised to city status in 1996. The historic centre is compact: the parish church, the town hall and the Casa Colombo museum sit within a few streets of each other, a short walk from the beach. Portuguese Wikipedia also lists the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Graça, built soon after the island was settled and restored in 1951.
What is in the Casa Colombo museum?
According to the regional culture department, tradition holds that this house was where Christopher Columbus lived after marrying Filipa Moniz Perestrelo, daughter of Bartolomeu Perestrelo, the first captain-donatary of Porto Santo. The museum project began in 1989 and was completely restructured in 2004 around the island's strategic place in Portugal's maritime expansion. In 2023 it was extended into the neighbouring "Baiana" building, which dates from the mid-17th century.
Official opening hours are Monday to Friday 10:00–12:30 and 14:00–17:30, and Saturday 10:00–13:00; the museum is closed on Sundays and public holidays. 2026 tickets: adult (26–64) €6, young person (13–25) €3, senior (65+) €3, family ticket €10, groups of more than six €4 per person. Visit Madeira's page gives different opening days, so call ahead (+351 291 983 840) if your visit depends on it.
For a day trip this matters: on a Sunday the museum is closed, and on a Saturday it is only open in the morning.
Which peaks and trails can I walk?
Porto Santo's north-east is a cluster of volcanic peaks. Wikipedia gives Pico do Facho as the highest at 517 m, with Pico do Castelo at 437 m. In the flatter south-west, Pico de Ana Ferreira (283 m, the highest point on that side according to Visit Madeira) is known for its prismatic basalt columns, nicknamed the "piano". Visit Madeira recommends viewing them from the Miradouro da Pedreira, near the golf course.
The IFCN list of classified walking routes includes three on Porto Santo. As of 2 October 2026:
| Route | Distance (official) | Start – end | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| PR 1 Vereda do Pico Branco e Terra Chã | 2.7 km (+2.7 km back) | ER 111 – Pico Branco – Terra Chã | open |
| PR 2 Vereda do Pico do Castelo | 3.2 km / 4.6 km | Moledo – Pico do Castelo | open |
| PR 3 Levada do Pico do Castelo | 4.1 km | Camacha – Ribeiro Formoso – Capela da Graça | closed |
PR 3 is closed while the water company ARM replaces water pipes along the levada. Like the Madeira routes, the classified trails come under the 2026 booking model, so check SIMplifica and our trail booking and fees page before you go, and read hiking safety in Madeira for the general rules.
Is a day trip enough, or should I stay?
The ferry timetable sets the limits of a day trip. With an 08:00 departure, a crossing of about 2 h 15 min and an 18:00 return, you have roughly seven and a half hours on the island. That is enough for a long walk on the beach, Vila Baleira and, on a weekday, the Casa Colombo museum.
A stay of one night or more makes more sense if you want to:
- walk PR 1 or PR 2 in the cooler early-morning hours;
- see the beach before the morning ferry arrives and after the evening one leaves;
- visit Pico de Ana Ferreira and the north-east viewpoints without watching the clock;
- avoid the risk of no sailing on the day you planned to return.
Porto Santo Line sells same-day packages that add transfers in Funchal or Caniço, bike hire, a two-hour island excursion or a 2 h 30 min off-road tour. The operator also notes the island's 18-hole, 6,434 m golf course designed by Severiano Ballesteros.
